The Plan Leaving London on 15th October 2006 we plan to travel across Europe to Turkey taking the route through Germany, Austria and the Balkans to Istanbul. After Turkey we travel through Syria, picking up Fran and into Jordan and Egypt. Crossing the border from Jordan to Egypt requires us to take a ferry from Aqaba (Jordan) to Nuweiba (Egypt) to avoid Israeli stamps on our passport, carnet, etc. Once in Africa we head for Cairo to obtain our Sudanese visas and for a team reshuffle. We lose Graham in Cairo, who is replaced by John’s father Andy. From Cairo we head along the Nile to Aswan, where Fran leaves us, and take the ferry along Lake Nasser to Sudan. We cross North East Sudan to Khartoum and Ethiopia. We separate from John and Andy in Ethiopia who are shooting on down to Zimbabwe in time for Christmas – hopefully we will meet them again in the New Year. We plan to spend three weeks in Ethiopia, before traveling to Kenya for Christmas. Then follows three weeks of game viewing and travel in Kenya and Tanzania before meeting Sarah (joining from Dubai) around 20th January. From there our plans become more flexible and we head down through Mozambique and Southern Malawi before entering Zambia. Our route may then pass through Zimbabwe and / or Botswana before heading for South Africa and Cape Town during April. After a brief respite in Cape Town we will take the vehicles up to Walvis Bay in Namibia from where they will be shipped back to the UK. Other Useful Info Communications We have an Immarsat satellite telephone for emergencies and mobile phones. Between vehicles we have CB band radios (Intek M-110) and Cobra walkie-talkies for when we are away from the vehicles. Travel Insurance We are using Trailfinders’s single trip policy which was £259 for six months and includes repatriation to the UK if needed. Visas We have obtained visas in London for Syria, Jordan, Egypt and Ethiopia in London. All these were straightforward, taking less than two days to obtain and will get the others during the trip. Inoculations and Malaria The following inoculations are required: Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, Rabies, Diptheria, Polio, Tetanus, Meningitis A & C, Cholera, Yellow Fever we have opted to use the expensive (but with limited side effects) option of Malarone for malarial prophylaxis. Paperwork Required Passport (with plenty of blank pages)
Navigation We have a Garmin 60C Map GPS receiver and Tracks4Africa software. Maps and guidebooks from Stanfords on Long Acre in London. |
